MOTHER-TO-MOTHER SUPPORT

Vital Milk is a durable medical equipment (DME) company with the primary goal of helping all mothers obtain a double electric breast pump and evidence-based lactation support as a benefit of her insurance plan. Vital Milk employs mothers (certified lactation counselors and breastfeeding peer counselors) who provide free in-home deliveries to offer personal instruction and evidence-based lactation support to mothers in their own communities.   We hope our services increase knowledge, confidence and empowerment. We want mothers to make informed decisions; we will respect every woman’s choice and offer help with individualized breastfeeding plans. If a mother needs a higher level of care beyond the scope of our services, Vital Milk works to connect her to a specialist before leaving her home. Vital Milk continues to follow-up with the mother until a new provider is established, ensuring the continuity of care for both the mother and her infant. Vital Milk is happy to also offer: ongoing lactation support, breastfeeding advocacy in the work place/school, current research on prescription medications and the effects on breast milk, and help with establishing community wide connections
MEET THE WOMAN OF VITALMILK!

I've been following my passion to support mothers ever since I became a WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor in 1999.  I have three children (born in 1998, 2010 and 2012) whom all self-weaned around three years of age. I think it is important to share the full spectrum of my breastfeeding experience so mothers know they are not alone when they face challenges or conflicting feelings; there were many high and low points in my breastfeeding journey. For example, I felt immense pride in my commitment to breastfeed as a teen mom and years later after my other two girls were born I struggled with feeling ambivalent and completely touched out at times. There are many barriers that can make it difficult for women to start and continue breastfeeding; I know the support I received from my partner, grandmother, parents and sibings was a factor that heavily impacted my success.

"I want to encourage woman to trust their own body's ability to provide all the nutrition their little one needs."
All families deserve to have access to culturally sensitive prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding classes. I think pregnant woman in the U.S. get bombarded with infant feeding advice, well intended anecdotal breastfeeding information, myths about breastfeeding and of course formula company advertisements. I think that many woman are aware of health benefits of breastfeeding; however, many women set intentions but ultimately fail because of a lack of social support systems in their families, friends, public health and medical professionals. I want to help support & educate woman so they can make more informed decisions when it comes to breastfeeding. I want to encourage woman to trust  their own body's ability to provide all the nutrition their little one needs.

I am a wife and mother to three lovely children. Two girls ages 12 and 9, and a boy 18 months. I decided during my first pregnancy that I would  breastfeed. Despite challenges I have had the precious experience of nursing my children. I enjoyed it so much that I tried to encourage other mothers to do the same if only for a little while and to hang in there through the not so easy times. After having successfully breastfed three children with completely different personalities and unique challenges, through varied circumstances, I thought that maybe I could share some of my experience to help and support other mothers. For this reason I am glad to work for Vital Milk, supporting mothers to have the products, information and support to be successful in nursing their own children.

I support mothers in Eastern MA  by doing home deliveries of breast pumps for Vital Milk. I have been working in this field for 11 years as a childbirth educator, a labor support doula, and a breastfeeding peer counselor. Last year, I became certified lactation counselor.  I am a native Spanish speaker and enjoy the opportunity to support local moms in my own community.  I also enjoy meeting and serving the families who come from all over the world b that end up giving birth in Boston. As a doula, I appreciate that I am able to spend such special moments with the families, supporting them during the birth of their new child. As an educator, I've realized that some mothers even with 1-2 babies don't know their own bodies very well and I like to educate them about the process of birth and labor. I like providing the home delivery service because most mothers request the breast pump when their babies are newborn and I'm glad to provide the support and education early on and help them overcome any of the initial challenges they may be experiencing.

I got interested in this field after having four of my own kids, breastfed them all! I like the closeness you have when you breastfeed your child and I like the benefits. When I had my own kids, I took breastfeeding classes and childbirth classes and I just was amazed about everything I learned about my own  body. I didn’t do anything else with the information at the time, I just raised my kids and had this experience with them. Then years later I moved from another state where I was doing totally different jobs there.  When I came to Boston, I found this kind of job, and thought – oh wow this is something that I like to do and I can help other mothers and parents with their experiences too!

Outside of work I enjoy gardening, yard sales and spending time with my children. There is not much time for anything else with 5 kids and working full time. My biological children are now 22 yrs old, 20yrs old, 17yrs old and 16yrs old. I also have an "adoptive" son who I've been raising since birth and he is now 4 and half yrs old.

I am so excited to be a part of VitalMilk’s team! My personal experience with breastfeeding is what shaped my passion and enthusiasm for helping other mother’s breastfeed. My first born son and I were able to breastfeed successfully for 3 years. My second son and I breastfed for 18 months. When I had my first child, I knew I wanted to breastfeed but did not know much else. Everyone said that breastfeeding was natural, but it sure did not feel natural when I started learning how to do it! I do not want any mother or family to go through what I went through in the early months of nursing and strive to be a person they can ask questions to and get support from comfortably.

“Breastfeeding is natural, or so they say. But, it doesn’t always feel natural in the first days. If support with breastfeeding is what you need, find it from us and we will happily help you succeed.”

Early into motherhood, I was told by some people that I should just give up on breastfeeding. It was not until I met with a CLC who changed my entire outlook and helped me feel confident that the nursing lifestyle started to feel as natural as everyone promised. It was then- when the CLC helped me- that I finally knew (after 21 years!) what career I wanted and what I wanted to focus my time and energy on. I have since become professionally trained to provide lactation support and am very proud of this accomplishment. I now am very fulfilled working to promote, protect and support breastfeeding in whatever ways I find possible. I am in awe of the mothers I have the opportunity to work with. Watching them bond with their babies is beautiful to me in every sense of the word. I want all mothers to know that they are honored and amazing, even if they don’t feel that way all the time. Motherhood is the best and hardest job there is. It is exciting and nerve-wracking all at the same time.  If you- the reader- take anything away from this introduction it is my wish that you know you have support with us here at VitalMilk and that we are extremely proud of you.

Aloha! My name is Diana Lozano and my son’s name is
Arlo Manuel Metzger. Together we are very blessed to
part of the Vital Milk community! Arlo will be 1 year old
on April 25, 2015 which will mark one full year of
breastfeeding! I can not believe it and give a tremendous
thanks to my partner, family, friends, Breastfeeding
consultant, and Midwives who have supported me thus
far in this marvelous experience.

It took a village to build up my confidence and routine
to successfully breastfeed. I never knew how difficult
breastfeeding could be. I never knew that society did
not fully support breastfeeding mothers and babies.
I never knew the state laws for public breastfeeding
and breastfeeding/pumping at work. I was astonished
at how hard it was to defend my baby’s right to breastfeed.
I wanted to advocate and continue to educate myself as
well as for others more about breastfeeding. Towards the
end of exclusively breastfeeding for six monts I began my
search to work with Breastfeeding moms!

I landed right here at Vital Milk learning quickly that I wished I had had Vital Milk in my birthing plans. I encourage every parent no matter what gender or who carried the child, to reach out to Vital Milk for more than just obtaining a free home delivery of an insurance covered breast pump by one of us, but also for a coach to guide you through anything about breastfeeding. You are not alone and if you feel that way remember, you are doing what your body was designed to do and you have the Vital Milk family! Arlo and I are bi-lingual and happy to translate and assist any Spanish speaking families!
